A group of hundreds, possibly thousands, of people marched through the streets of Phoenix on Saturday, demonstrating against Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio.
They called their effort "A March To Stop The Hate" and it was put together by a number of organizations, who believe Arpaio's illegal-immigration policies violate human rights and should be stopped.
“Those of us who have been concerned about Sheriff Joe have felt like we’ve been in a silent scream the last couple years,” said Linda Brown, executive director of the Arizona Advocacy Network. “(But) we’re very excited because we think what we’re seeing is the beginning of a national echo chamber against what Sheriff Joe is doing.”
“We are humans. We should be treated equally and not be pointed out as someone who should not be here,” added Greg Mares, who opposes Arpaio. Under a deal [ed.- Deal is with US Homeland Security] allowing them to enforce federal immigration laws, the deputies have arrested more than 1,500 people whom they determined were in Arizona illegally.Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio has dispatched deputies into Hispanic communities in the Phoenix area where they stop and arrest anyone who cannot prove he or she is a legal U.S. resident.
