  1. Roses, so pretty. At least one of my roses got killed by the cold. It was one that my boyfriend gave me last summer before he broke up with me. That was a very unhappy summer for me.

  2. Thistle flowers are interesting but those leaves are like so sci-fi, and ouch!

  3. As honey would say, DAMN STRAIGHT...the leaves are really nasty...Onopordum acanthium is the cotton thistle, also known as Scottish Thistle, its the national emblem for Scotland, and native to there. How it ends up growing along our south fence near the creek is anyone's guess.
"Onopordum acanthium (Scotch thistle) is a biennial or short-lived perennial (family Asteraceae) which is primarily found in the northeastern regions of California. Severe infestations can form tall, dense, impenetrable stands, especially in fertile soils. Onopordum acanthium reproduces only by seeds, which can germinate year round, and it is drought resistant. Infestations can reduce forage and impede movement for livestock and wildlife."

Far more common is Yellow Star Thistle, native to Asia. In the summer around here when the alfalfa and other feed grasses are harvested, this stuff will take over any baren dirt and is the major source of "weeds" along with wild oats...This particular thisle can also grow in with alfalfa and hay, and is toxic to horses. i once had to destroy(burn) a 1/4 ton of hay because this stuff was in every bale. That was back in the days i thought i was a horse person, we had two Arabians.

  4. Uh, I don't recall seeing any thistles when I first visited this post. Me eyes must be a bit out of whack.
