Sometimes I wonder about us as a country

I wonder if we will make it as a country.

We have endured bad leaders and good; inflation, recession and depressions. We as a nation have acheived great things. Our constituiton is a pretty great thing. The principles spelled out are pretty great,  reflecting not just the wisdom of some wealthy guys over 200 years ago, but added to over the generations, mostly to correct social injustices. Sometimes just to fine tune.

Our country has provided the opportunity to acheive great wealth; to be corrupt and reprehensible , or to be incredibly generous. Your choice.

We have done some pretty good things -

Now some good things that america has done
1. Internet (not Al Gore, it was DARPA)
2. Transitor
3. Computers
4. Cure for Polio
5. We invented the Supertrain.. just didn't use it
6. Televison
7. Man on the Moon
8. Trillions in foriegn aid to just about everyone
9. Stopped the USSR
10. Rock and Roll ( maybe some people disagree)
11. Put the Hubble Space Telescope in Orbit
12. Broke the Sound Barrier
13 UN (as much as I hate it)

Some claim we invent cars, whicih rightfully belongs to Daimler..although Daimler and Benz are traditionally credited with building the first cars in 1886, but the French claim it was first built in 1884 by Delamare-Deboutteville. Still others claim it was built in 1860. It all depends on your definition of a car. Ford perfected the assembly line...but I digress.

We have done these things and more because we as a people, not always in agreement about how to get there, went there. Went to revolt and start a new nation. Went to invent. Went to war against fascism. Went to stare down Soviet threat. Went to the moon. Went to space period. We did these and more not as democrats or republicans( or American Independents or whatever) but Americans.

When LBJ was president, we marched(some of us) to stop poverty or a war in asia.
When Nixon was president, we marched (some of us) to stop a war (still)...and found out the really is not above the law.
Carter, Reagan, George HW Bush, Clinton
All had their detractors, or fans, but as Americans we stood together- until the second Clinton term...that is when the fracture started, and it has grown worse ever since.
It has become so pervasive that once free press is now either liberal (MSNBC) or Conservative (FOX) or merely leftist (everyone else). (Remember, dont get angry, I am being nice here)

There is such a vitriol that all discussion, especially televised news, is a shouting match. There are Democrat and Republicans that still believe in working together, and they are branded as party traitors by the far left and far right...and meanwhile the government we elected does what they will.

Some of us get a little upset when the government proposes to spent the country down the river. We were heading that way via our national addiction for cheap good made by peasants in elsewhere, and now we are the largest debtor nation in the world...ever.  So good people, (Democrats, republicans and everyone else) decide to emulate the early colonists and stage the most American of exercises of free speech and hold protest rallies across the country.

And the reaction, why first its denial, then we get blathering idiots attempting to educate the masses on their own stupidity.

I wasn’t going to waste my time writing about this quote from Janeane Garofalo, but how often is it that you can find such a colossal example of  ignorant, bigoted, insulting, stupid, arrogant, uninformed, malicious, moronic, intolerant, close-minded, idiocy from just one person? Usually you would to combine Sean Penn, Tim Robbins, and Rosie O’Donnel to come up with equal stupidity to what Janeane Garofalo said.

And this to me typlifies why we might not make it. I am angry at what she said, but I even angrier that no one on the left seems to be the slightest bit critical that maybe she is being too harsh (or just plain stupid).

Atlas Shrugged is enjoying a revitalized rebirth. Some states are pondering their own self interest and considering the unthinkable, secession.

Are we going back to the California Republic, the Republic of Texas?

I wonder if we will make it as a country.

What do you think?

  1. First of all Janeane Garofalo is an idiot. I don't have a racist bone in my body. I may dislike some people but it is not because of the color of their skin or religion. I pretty much dislike people who have no room for compromise. And I find people like that to be "ignorant, bigoted, insulting, stupid, arrogant, uninformed, malicious, moronic, intolerant, close-minded". The liberals don't own this country and compromise is the thing that has made this country great. Well.........you are right. They will take the country down. I am so hoping I am wrong and would love to have certain friends do a happy dance around me telling me how wrong I am.

  2. I had not heard this persons remarks before now. You may be right about our development as a free country slowing as a result of deep divisions like this...but...while she IS representative of a faction of the population...so are we who vehemently disagree with her.. and are willing to fight for the principles this country was based on. I think the US still has more than a fighting chance.

I couldn't connect to the comment via your link so I found this on youtube coupled with what Janeane Garofalo said about dissent when it applied to actors taking political stands. I hope you don't mind me posting it but I thought it might help.

  5. First of all, Al Gore never said he invented the internet. Al Gore claimed he coined the phrase, "Information Superhighway"

The whole idea is to keep the populous divided along lines, along racial lines, along political lines, along whatever lines you can create. A populous that is divided and fighting among themselves is much less of a worry, much less of a threat. As for the division of left and right, liberal and conservative, I saw that division widen and I saw the hatred from the division increase tremendously under George W Bush; that was all by design. Before the regime of King George II, you found most people in the middle, standard bell curve. However they worked to skew the curve, to force people into a division against each other.

Garofalo is another Coulter, I am surprsed she is not writing a book a week like Coulter. They spew nonsense as it is all they can do. The racist card will be played time and time again because it is a good weapon to use. People are so afraid of being labelled a racist and will then go on the defence against it. The best action against the racist play is to ignore it.

The task at hand is to end the sharp lines of division between the people in this country. If the people don't come together, then the agenda being put into motion behind the scenes will have no real opposition.

  6. All very well said. In my opinion the real crux of the problem is to get people to think along objective lines. That is...to open their eyes...look at the information available and choose to make rational decisions based on logic and evidence...which means...to discard blind faith. Faith and force are corollaries. Ignore evidence and logic and force is all that's left to settle disputes.

  7. I absolutely agree. We used to have tolerance for each other's views. We need to find a way back to that and compromise as I have stated in my posts.

  8. I have to plead with myself not to criticise or even state my own thoughts as to where this country is headed.
Oop's Canicen you nailed it ""Some of us get a little upset when the government proposes to spent the country down the river. We were heading that way via our national addiction for cheap good made by peasants in elsewhere, and now we are the largest debtor nation in the world""...
Seems things have gotten far worse since the 60s & 70s . Now those with the money the corporate super powers are holding the government at bay. Sam Walton had a great idea lets build it there,
we will pay cheaper labor rates own the companies themselves re-sell in the great dumbash of the USA. NAFTA worked for who? Now a mention of a New World Order. Smells like a rose and we will be the ones left with the thorns.

Lots of talk on this and that but nothing to hold up the working class. Without them,..well maybe you can see the bigger picture. We no longer produce the steel we once did. Our automotive Ford,GM, are dwindling. Manufacturer's are moving south and now the housing market, need I say more. Sure thing its all for the Buck but how much does anyone need,
    seriously how much.

So I got upset and out of control, having every right to do so. I found the liars, cheats, those I could point a finger at, but what good did it do, None... What good is the Internet, google, scroogle and all its web pages when all one reads is from those
effected with adware and have nothing of meaning or substance.

  9. Do you really believe the stuff you write, or are you just trying to get people riled? Seroiusly.
Coulter and Garafalo comparisons?? Garafalo fashions herself to be this generations Jane Fonda, darling ot the lefty loonies...Coulter is I think in it ofr the money as much as anything. Garafalo on the otherhand comes across as see herself sort of above the rest of us peons..King George II is typical leftist propaganda...what ever he did wrong (and there is plenty) does not justify assertion of being seeing higher status than he had as president.
I think you and i agree on more than we disagree, but i wonder...

  10. I opposed the idea of NAFTA, agreeing with Ross Perot at the time that it would drain jobs from the us southward to Mexico. I was partly correct, but the real drain was as you stated, overseas. And for the last couple of decades, there is a push to either outsource to asia, or import the educated engineers whom Intel, HP and other can pay substantially less. As a friend of mine from India says "America has 300 plus million people, right? India has 280 million with bachelor degrees, and they graduate 48.7 million annually...so where all those educated people going to work??
