August 31, 2008

I , like many millions of other people, was made aware of significant events in the last quarter of century by television news..and not the delayed wait until we can confirm it of the 60's and 70's but the cable news, satellite news, immediate information that really became significant to me with the onset of CNN in 1980.

One of those events was staying up in the wee hours to watch a young woman I had never heard of really, get married on TV to the Prince of Wales...I had never seen a royal wedding, and it was something to see...I mean really, it was a spectacle I enjoyed watching. Yet that same medium also has immediately notified me of tragic events as well.

I watched in horror on live TV as the Challenger exploded in 1986...I had just finished watching a movie, and pulled out the tape from our BetaMax and the TV again brought forth images to make anyone cry in 1996 when TWA 800 exploded and crashed into the Atlantic.

Then there is the events that unfolded in late hours in California when it was already August 31 in Paris France, and Princess Diana died. I remember at first being stunned, and then as the days went by, becoming more and more sad to the point it was like a family member had passed- yet like so many billions of other sad people, I never had met or even seen her other than via TV and published photos.

This is how I received that awful news this day 11 years ago
