A Dog called Courage

A good samaritan spotted him and arranged his rescue.

A three year German Shepard chained to a tree without food or water - for 5 weeks.

The dog, named "Courage" by German Shepherd Rescue volunteers weighed only 37 pounds when he was carried into the emergency clinic last week, apparently only hours away from death.

"A woman came up to me and asked me why I was sitting there with a dead dog, because he looked like he was dead," animal rescue volunteers told KTLA.

A healthy adult male German Shepherd should weigh 75-85 pounds. Courage,  was unable to walk or hold his head up because he had no muscle, according to veterinarians; he had subsisted on eating gravel and dirt.

The owner, a 26 year old woman has been arrested and is in jail under $50,000 bail, charged with animal cruelty and infliction of intentional harm to an animal, a felony

Courage is expected to fully recover

  2. The Southeast Area Animal Control Authority put out word today that 26-year-old Kimberly Nizato, who works part-time as a technician at a veterinary hospital, is under arrest.

How is this possible, that a vet technician could do this? According to City News Service:

Animal control officials said Nizato kept the dog -- who was known as Bosco but has now been nicknamed Courage -- in an airplane animal carrier in her garage. It was unknown exactly how long the dog went without food, Reyes said. The animal was starving and weighed only about half of its normal weight when found. ``But clearly this poor guy hadn't eaten for several weeks,'' Reyes said.

  3. The German Shepherd Rescue of Orange County is willing to do what it takes to get Courage the care that he needs. After the misery that this dog has endured, how could they possibly do anything less?

However, his medical expenses are going to be high - expenses hitting a rescue that was just slammed by high veterinary expenses incurred from treating 2 puppies who had Parvo.

Individuals who have been touched by Courage's story are encouraged to make a donation to the German Shepherd Rescue of Orange County. Donations can be directly at the rescue's website via PayPal and are tax deductible (the rescue is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization).
